Victory for Basic Human Decency! Collective Action Wins Workplace Injury Accommodations

Man in a warehouse in a hard hat with back pain

Many of us have developed chronic, physically painful conditions as a result of working at Amazon. One coworker, Marisol, an experienced stower at SCA3, developed carpal tunnel. She applied to receive worker’s compensation and workplace accommodations. Amazon managers froze her claim and denied her simple injury accommodations. Worse yet, they refused Marisol’s request to be assigned away to a position outside of stowing. They gave her an ultimatum: work and hurt herself, or go home and miss pay.

A group of us came together with Marisol to talk to HR. We demanded that Amazon process her injury claim, reassign her to another job, and return the Voluntary Time Off (VTO) she was forced to use because of their refusal to reassign her.

Management was extremely defensive, hiding behind staffing excuses and long winded bureaucratic caveats. But when we continued to show solidarity and stand firm on our demands, they conceded. Our co-worker’s injury complaint was finally processed, and her injury was accommodated until the official paperwork came through.
