Labor Power and Strategy-- A Talk with John Womack

On April 3, 2025, John Womack will visit ASU's Tempe campus for a two-part event. First, Womack will host a webinar from 10:30-11:30am. (You can register for the Zoom webinar here.)  Later, from 5:00-6:30pm, he will present his talk, "Labor Power and Strategy" with commentary from CWD Director Michael McQuarrie, in room 135 in West Hall.

Talk Details:

During the duration of his illustrious career as an economist and historian, John Womack's scholarship has shifted from primarily the study of Mexican history to a study of labor power and strategy. His scholarship considers “strategic positions” at work and loci of work in technical connections-- namely transport, communications, or logistics, but also in manufacturing, education, and health systems. In this talk, his pays special attention to chokepoints in the supply chain and how they can disrupt production or the flow of services to labor’s benefit.

About John Womack:

John Womack was born in Norman, Oklahoma in 1937, attended Norman public schools 1943-51, Thomas Jefferson School in St. Louis 1951-55, Harvard College 1955-59, the University of Oxford 1959-61, and Harvard University for his Ph. D. 1961-66, and has published books and articles on the history of Mexico and Latin America. He has one daughter, one son, and two grandsons.
