Biography

Triana Silton has over 30 years-experience in the labor movement, starting with the Justice for Janitors campaign of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 399 in 1994 as a Field Organizer. In 2000, she led 8,000 mostly low-wage, immigrant women on a 12-day strike for family healthcare, a decent raise, and the right to organize. After spending more than ten years working with janitors – developing leaders, organizing not-yet-union workers, fighting for immigration reform, and taking on employers to raise the standard of living for thousands of janitors, Triana joined SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West (UHW). As UHW Deputy Chief of Staff, Triana worked as part of a leadership team for the 97,000-member union’s fight for healthcare justice—affordable, accessible, high-quality care for everyone provided by respected and valued caregivers everywhere.

She is currently working on a book based on oral histories collected from workers about their experiences both leading and serving in worker-led organizations, showcasing how to build democratic workers’ organizations through collaboratively created innovations in leadership development and organizational capacity.
