The Wildfire Problem

When you’re organized already, and something that people care about happens,

things happen much more organically. Everyone knows what to do” - Ray

In September 2024, a wildfire was spreading dangerously close to the KSBD air cargo hub in San Bernardino, California. Smoke visibly permeated the area, causing many outside ramp workers and inside workers to choke while they were forced to work.

Management insisted on keeping the building open. So we got together and resolved to bring our safety concerns straight to the boss.

More than 50 workers joined a delegation demanding the building’s closure. And when the bosses continued to ignore their concerns and keep the warehouse open, workers performed a sit-in at their breakroom, refusing to work in unsafe conditions until they were sent home with pay.

An hour later, a frazzled management conceded to the worker’s safety concerns. They closed the building, and sent us all home with full pay for our shift.
